Word Play Way in Lincoln Square

A Puzzling Sidewalk
Word Play Way is officially complete! The giant outdoor word grid, which runs along the sidewalk bordering Welles Park on Lincoln Avenue between Sunnyside and Montrose Avenues, is open through April 2018. The grid is comprised of nearly 5,000 letters designed by Bit Space, forming words that are child-friendly and tie back into the Lincoln Square neighborhood.  Most of the words have also been translated into Spanish.

Word Play Way provides families and neighbors with interactive literacy and learning opportunities, as well as a chance to connect with the community.

“Goodcity is thrilled to be partnering with the David L. Hoyt Foundation on their Word Play Way project,” said Tessa Larson, director of INVEST Chicago. “[The Foundation’s] mission to create space for community members to engage in public while encouraging both learning and literacy is an important one — and one we couldn't be more proud to support.”

The installation was designed and organized by Jumble author David L. Hoyt, in partnership with Goodcity, The Chicago Community Trust and Lowe's Home Improvement of Lincolnwood. Word Play Way would not have been possible without the support of the 47th Ward Alderman's Office, CDOT - Make Way for People, Welles Park, Sulzer Library, Lincoln Square-Ravenswood Chamber of Commerce and Northcenter Chamber of Commerce.
